The images from Nepal shook us to the core: a massive flood of mud and water swept through the Trishuli Valley, destroying dozens of villages in its path. At least a thousand people lost their lives in the disaster, while more than 4,500 people remain missing. Among those affected are partners of atmosfair. In the village of Syabrubesi, the flood swept away two lodges that were part of the Climate Trek in the Langtang Valley. We rebuilt these lodges after the 2015 earthquake as part of the first climate-friendly hiking trail.
In total, we equipped 20 guesthouses in the region with self-sufficient energy systems comprising solar panels, efficient stoves, heaters, insulation, and water purifiers. We worked in collaboration with Manfred Häupl, the former managing director of the tour operator Hauser Exkursionen, which is now part of Studiosus. He has been promoting sustainable tourism in the region for decades and has an excellent network there.
We are now drawing on the contacts from our long-standing involvement in the region to provide assistance to the people affected. atmosfair supports the German Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation, of which Manfred Häupl is vice-chairman. The foundation passes all the funds on to the Himalayan Trust. The Trust is funding the rescue of survivors and victims and providing people in the Trishuli Valley with everything they urgently need in this situation: medical aid, tents, and food.

In the current crisis, the highest priority is saving lives and providing humanitarian aid. The Hillary Foundation is using its donations for this purpose. In the long term, however, the people in the destroyed villages need economic prospects once again. That is why, as a second step, we are planning to rebuild the destroyed lodges and their owners’ homes.
