Companies should initially focus their climate action efforts on avoiding and reducing emissions. Global climate action makes sense only for emissions that are currently unavoidable or are expected to remain so in the long term.
You can support atmosfair’s climate action projects in countries of the Global South in two ways:
1. Offsetting in accordance with the rules of the Paris Agreement (with corresponding adjustments under Article 6)
This approach contributes to the 1.5°C target beyond the climate action programmes of individual countries. To achieve this, the host countries apply so-called ‘corresponding adjustments’ to the CO₂ savings generated by our projects, ensuring that these savings are not counted towards their own emissions reduction targets. This makes their national CO₂ reduction targets correspondingly more ambitious and leads to additional climate action. The mechanism is monitored within the UN framework.
2. Climate action contributions based on Contribution Claims
Projects based on ‘Contribution Claims’ also contribute to global emissions reductions. However, the resulting savings are credited to the host country and support its emissions reduction targets under the Paris Agreement. Companies thereby position themselves as active partners in international climate action.
3. Removal and storage of CO₂ from the atmosphere (carbon removals)
Through these projects, we help combat climate change by removing CO₂ from the atmosphere and storing it permanently underground. To achieve this, we use biochar, Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) and Direct Air Capture. These methods enable reliable and permanent CO₂ removal, unlike forest conservation and reforestation projects, which we exclude from our offsetting programme. Carbon removal technologies are becoming increasingly important and are supported by both the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the IPCC.
4. Support atmosfair’s work with a donation
Every year, there is a global funding gap of around €700 billion for achieving the Paris climate targets through clean energy. In addition to purchasing certificates and establishing your own project, you can also support atmosfair’s projects with a donation. We use these donations to establish and expand renewable energy projects in the Global South.
You will receive CO₂ credits for all Corresponding Adjustments, Contribution Claim and Carbon Removal projects. At the same time, all atmosfair climate action projects deliver tangible benefits for local communities and the environment. Stiftung Warentest has repeatedly declared us test winner.
