Protecting Nature with Efficient Cookstoves
For generations, most rural families in India have relied on firewood, animal dung, and charcoal for daily cooking. Today, around 41% of the population still lacks access to clean cooking fuels and burning these traditional fuels accounts for roughly 13% of India’s greenhouse gas emissions. In states like Karnataka and Kerala, many households continue using open fires because gas cylinder refills are expensive, hard to access, or simply run counter to traditional cooking habits. While government programs have helped urban families switch to gas due to better supply and higher incomes, rural communities still need practical, affordable solutions to protect local environments and family health.
Technology
Indian cuisine relies on a wide variety of recipes cooked in pots of all shapes and sizes. The Greenway Jumbo Stoves are built strong and stable to handle heavy daily use, allowing cooks to use their favorite pots without restriction. Rigorous testing shows that these stoves cut firewood use by up to 65% compared to open three-stone fires. By working directly with manufacturers and removing middlemen, we provide these high-quality stoves to families at a fraction of the regular market cost.
Cleaner Kitchens and Healthier Families
Traditional three-stone fires waste most of their heat and burn wood poorly, producing heavy smoke and requiring large piles of firewood just to make a meal. Our efficient cookstoves solve this with an enclosed chamber that channels heat straight to the bottom of the pot, cooking food faster with far less fuel. Because the wood burns cleanly and completely, the stove produces almost no smoke. This keeps kitchen air clear and directly protects women and young children—who spend the most time near the hearth—from dangerous smoke and respiratory illness.
Financial Independence for Women
In many low-income rural households, women have little say in financial decisions and lack the collateral needed to get loans from regular banks. We partner with local microfinance institutions (MFIs) that offer small, collateral-free loans, allowing women to buy an efficient stove through small, manageable installments instead of paying the full price upfront. Paying off their stove on time helps women build an official credit history. This opens the door to future microloans to purchase life-improving items like bicycles or to fund their own small businesses, fostering long-term economic independence.
Supporting India’s Climate Goals
While clean cookstoves are not currently counted under India’s bilateral Article 6 carbon framework, our project continues to operate and generate high-integrity carbon credits under the Gold Standard. This rigorous verification ensures that every stove delivered creates measurable, lasting climate and community benefits throughout the project’s lifetime.
