Berlin, November 2025. The project #KlimabewusstReisen (Climate-Conscious Travel) receives the German Sustainability Award. At its heart is the KlimaLink emissions data platform, to which atmosfair has contributed significantly. For the first time, it enables the CO₂ footprint of travel to be determined in accordance with ISO standards and displayed in booking systems and at the point of sale. The award jury considers reliable and uniform data to be the key to lower-emission tourism.
KlimaLink calculates the emissions caused by an entire trip, depending on accommodation and means of transport. For example, it allows you to compare bus-only trips with a combination of rental car and flights. Travel agencies and other distribution partners have been using the platform since March 2025 to show their customers the impact their planned trip will have on the climate.
“With our climate footprints, there is finally a reliable criterion that travel consultants can use to identify lower-emission travel options and help customers make more climate-friendly travel decisions,” explains KlimaLink Managing Director Saskia Sánchez Buitrago.

atmosfair ensures science-based emissions calculations
From the beginning, atmosfair has been significantly involved in developing and certifying the standards according to ISO 14083 on which the calculations are based. In particular, we provided the algorithms for calculating flight emissions. The footprint of car journeys and hotel stays was developed by the atmosfair IT team as well.
“The input masks of the distribution partners look very different. But we have succeeded in creating a common interface that can handle different types of data and calculate uniform emission data from it,” says atmosfair team leader Sebastian Hirsch. Since the climate impact of travel is not limited to carbon dioxide emissions alone, KlimaLink expresses emissions as CO₂ equivalents (CO₂e). This applies, among other things, to the climate impact of aircraft contrails.
Project #KlimabewusstReisen by Futouris and Deutscher Reiseverband
The sustainability initiative Futouris e.V. and the German Travel Association (DRV) founded the association KlimaLink e.V. in 2022 to show the climate footprint of travel in a uniform manner. To date, 39 companies and associations support this platform, continuously develop it further and ensure that it is widely used.
The German Sustainability Award has been presented annually since 2008 to companies, institutions and committed individuals. The chairwoman of KlimaLink e.V., Swantje Lehners, will accept the award on 4 December 2025 in Düsseldorf.
