Our climate
Our atmosphere is a small miracle of nature. It contains so-called greenhouse gases, which surround the Earth like a protective shield and prevent the warmth emitted by the Earth from escaping into space. Without greenhouse gases it would be bitterly cold on Earth. As it is, however, the Earth has a constant temperature of 15 degrees Celsius.
Unnaturally high warming
Increased emissions from industry, private households and traffic resulted in an increase of greenhouse gases and a heating up of the atmosphere by an unnatural rate. Above all, it is the industrialized countries which are responsible for this additional, unnatural greenhouse effect. If we cannot get the global warming under control, there will be large-scale consequences. Ongoing increase of greenhouse gas emissions will result in an average global warming of 1.4°C to 5.8°C and a rise of sea level around 10 to 90 cm. Flooding of coastal regions and low-lying island states, as well as a spreading desertification and melting of glaciers would be the consequences. Even today climate change is causing most of the natural catastrophes, like flooding and droughts. For more information, please click here here.
