Burkina Faso: Green Power from crop residues
| Total savings: | 5.000 t CO2 per year, over 10 years | |
| Technology transfer: | Biomass gasification to produce electricity | |
| Local environment: | Replacement of diesel generators | |
| Target Group: | Two rural communities in Burkina Faso | |
| Project partners: | German Ministry of Environment | |
Less than 15% of households in Burkina Faso have access to electricity, in the rural areas only less than 5%. More than two thirds of the electricity consumed in Burkina Faso is coming from diesel power stations.
atmosfair will erect biomass gasification units with an installed capacity of 1,5 to 2 MW in the rural communities of Pô and Garango. 5.000 to 7.500 t CO2 will be saved every year.
The plants will produce electricity from crop residues, mainly from groundnuts and cotton cultivation. The electricity will be fed into the grid of the national supplier Sonabel.
Besides saving greenhouse gases, the project will contribute to an improved power supply for rural areas, will cut electricity procurement costs for the supplier, and created additional income in the rural areas through the purchase of biomass. Staff from the region will be trained to operate the plant.
This project is funded by the German Ministry for Environment (BMU) in the framework of its International Climate Protection Initiative. Generated Certified Emission reductions will be retired on behalf of the BMU. Donations from our customers are not used in this project.
